Good to have you with us. We’ve gone through a number of different of eco and Fairtrade shirts to try and guage which would be best to use. These are all important and trying to find shirts which fit all 3 and still look great is unbelievably difficult!
Anyway - there is tons of options to consider so we may chop and change the brand we use dependant on which we feel is best. However, we’ll continue to purchase only Fairtrade certified cotton, but maybe give the option of you chosing which type of shirt to get the designs on. Is there any Fairtrade organic hemp brands you know about at all? (what a mouthful!) It’s certainly something we’d consider using if so.
I have no real experience with hemp organic fairtrade shirts, but a little searching on the internet brought me to the following links which may or may not be useful to you.
By the looks of things, none of these are Fairtrade certified garments and eligible to bear the UK’s Fairtrade mark - (notice one word, not “Fair Trade”, - Fairtrade). Confused?... thought so
To obtain the Fairtrade mark, the garments are subject to strict standards. If you look at Fair hemps description of what they produce for instance - they only talk about their environmental impact and sustainability, rather than conditions for their workers for example.
It sounds really pedantic I know, but has been imposed for labelling products clearly. Anyway, if you’d like to know more - check out This page
Ian, I appreciate your (FAB’s) pedantic attitude, sticking to your guns is what being ethical is all about. Not giving in to the mass marketing and purchasing stock that is just the cheapest. The savings one would make is paid for by some less empowered person elsewhere on this planet. It’s what has made me interested in your site as opposed to others.
The links I posted were just the first links I could find via searching on the net, and indeed are probably not what you guys could use.
However your Organic Fair Trade cotton tees are also great, just the hippy in me would love to see Organic Fair Trade hemp tees as well. (if they exist) In their defence the Fair Hemp website does actually mention conditions for their workers
About Fair Hemp
What is Fairly Traded?
Adhering to fair trade principles ensures that the products we manufacture do not exploit workers; frequently underpaid, abused, and even underage. Workers are paid a fair wage, and child labor is never used. Instead of sweatshops, workers enjoy safe and healthy working conditions, and they benefit from equal opportunity employment. These same principles also protect the environment by promoting environmentally sustainable practices.
I understand that their conditions might not meet up with the requirements for the Fair Trade logo, but I certainly do support your efforts at being ethical. Living in Holland I am well familiar with the Fair Trade trademark, and already purchase as ethically as I can manage. I am very interested in green issues and am an ardent promoter of sustainability, permaculture, and a return to a more environmentally friendly earth space.
Hi FAB guys.
I am pleased to have found your cool site. I am even more happy to have a wotto tee on its way to me!
It is great to see an ethical Tee Design site! I love the fact that you print on fairtrade organic cotton tees. Have you also considered organic hemp?
All the best!
