Here in Wales, a new policy is being proposed to charge customers of supermarkets up to 20p for plastic bags in local supermarkets.
There’s a news article on it on the BBC’s website here.
One of the comments on our local news from a Cardiff local wound me up a bit, she said that she “didn’t mind paying 2/3p a bag but 20p was ridiculous”. I felt this was pretty stupid, since the idea was that she wouldn’t have to pay those charges if she actually re-used her bags!
Anyway, what are peoples take on this, or in fact recycling in general. What’s the policy in your part of the world?
Here in Holland, you have to pay about 20c for a sturdy plastic bag from the supermarket. I don’t really have a problem with that, although I do usually bring my own bag.
I have no problem paying for a plastic bag, as long as the bag is sturdy and can be reused.
In terms of recycling, we separate bio waste and general rubbish, but where we live there are no nearby (walking distance) recycling bins for glass paper etc. Although in bigger towns and cities in Holland, these are more conveniently located. I think that most people at least separate glass from the general trash.
For people to recycle more, these bins need to be easily reached (in walking distance) from your front door. Otherwise the effort required to recycle is too much for all but the most ardent greeny.
I agree with the Gnome! Councils (governments) need to make it as easy as possible for all of us to recycle by providing easy to use, accessible facilities - particularly household collection services as many people like the idea of recycling but don’t feel they can/need to make the effort - sad but true.
It is vital that these services include clear, encouraging instructions as to what can/can’t be recycled, contact details for other recycling options and information on where the collections go and what difference using the service will make to the area/town/city/country.
I think that governments also need to reign in the supermarkets who cause an awful lot of waste and pass much of it on to customers. So, if that means compulsory charging for plastic bags so be it, but banning plastic bags altogether would be more effective.
Supermarkets should also be made to reduce individual item packaging so that we don’t have to deal with the waste that they cause. They could easily request that suppliers use less product packaging and/or provide recycling bins in store that we can use to dispose of the unnecessary waste in store rather than taking it home.
